8mm

The 8mm film format is a pre-video consumer home-movie format. The image plane of the 8mm film is: 4.5mm × 3.3mm (5.58mm diagonal) = 14.85mm2. At one time, 8mm home movies were the only available option before commercially available video cameras became available. The small image plane resulted in quite a deep-focus image and one that did not look great when projected on a large screen.

Super 8

Super 8 film is an advancement of the 8mm home-movie film format that used the same 8mm celluloid, but rearranged size and shape of the film gate and the sprocket holes to accommodate a larger image plane (surface area) on the 8mm film stock, improving the resolution slightly.

Super 8 and 8mm film had a distinctive look that can invoke a sense of nostalgia when used today. As well as the deep focus, the images often have a softness to the focus, caused by older vintage lenses, which were typically less sharp than today’s lenses. They are usually very grainy, caused by the reduced sensitivity to light and the need to enlarge the picture a lot to view at a decent size. There is also often a scratchy and weathered quality to Super 8 movies that are viewed today, caused by wear and tear and multiple projections over the years.

The image plane of the Super 8 film is: 5.79mm × 4.01mm (7.04mm diagonal) = 23.21mm2.
